Personal Property Damage
The University of Richmond does not assume responsibility or routinely reimburse for personal property belonging to faculty, staff, students, or others. Individuals who bring personal belongings onto University-owned or University-controlled property, or to University-sponsored events do so at their own risk and are strongly encouraged to maintain appropriate personal property insurance.
Faculty and Staff
Employees who bring personal items to the workplace, including unapproved items or equipment used for work, do so at their own risk. Such items should be protected through the individual’s own personal property insurance.
Students
The University encourages all students to obtain insurance to protect against the unlikely occurrence of damage to or theft of their personal belongings while on campus. Students who choose not to insure their items do so at their own risk and should not expect to be reimbursed by the University for damage to or theft of their belongings.
Many students and families rely on homeowner’s insurance to cover personal property losses while enrolled; however, these policies vary widely and often do not fully cover such losses.
The University has partnered with GradGuard to offer a low-cost renters insurance program specifically designed for students. Students are encouraged to review the coverage and determine if it meets their needs.
Reimbursement Considerations
In limited circumstances, the University may consider reimbursement when the loss or damage results directly from a negligent act or omission by the University. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and is subject to investigation by the Office of Risk Management and the University's insurer.
The University is not responsible for losses resulting from wear and tear, theft, unsecured property, or prohibited items. Cash and gift cards are also excluded from reimbursement consideration.
Report Personal Property Damage
To report an incident for reimbursement consideration, please complete the Risk Management Incident Report within 48 hours of the occurrence.
The Office of Risk Management and/or the University's insurer will investigate to determine the validity and value of the claim, collect relevant information, and determine liability.
